Childcare at home: the checklist for a calm first time in 2026
Trusting a nanny at home with your child for the first time is often accompanied by legitimate apprehension. Here is the checklist to follow so everything goes well from the very first session.
Information to share before the nanny arrives
- The child's schedule: meal times, nap times, usual activities.
- Allergies and dietary restrictions, as well as any medication and its precise dosage.
- People authorized to pick up the child, if applicable.
- The child's habits: comfort object, bedtime routine, what reassures them if they cry.
Contacts to leave clearly visible
- Your phone number and that of a relative reachable in an emergency.
- The child's usual pediatrician's number.
- The exact home address, useful if emergency services need to be called.
Day one: the right reflexes
Be present, or stay for a few minutes at the start of the first session, to make introductions and show around the home (bedroom, kitchen, emergency exits). Leave a note with the essential information in addition to the verbal briefing — it's easier to check in case of doubt while you're away. Ask for a message or photo during the session if that reassures you: many nannies offer this spontaneously.
After the first session
Give the nanny feedback on what went well and what could be adjusted — this helps build a lasting relationship of trust if you plan to have her come back regularly.
