Adapted physical activity at home in Morocco: coaching with a medical condition

Adapted physical activity at home

Adapted physical activity is not gentler training. It is training built around a medical condition, an injury or a limitation, by someone who knows how to adjust load, movement and pace to that specific constraint. The distinction matters, because booking the wrong thing here has consequences that an ordinary session does not.

What it is — and what it is not

It is a programme designed around a documented constraint: recovery after surgery, a chronic condition, a joint problem, a pregnancy, a long period of inactivity. The coach adapts the movements, the range, the load and the rest intervals to what the body can currently take.

It is not physiotherapy. A coach does not treat, does not manipulate and does not replace a prescribed rehabilitation programme. Where rehabilitation ends, adapted activity can begin — and the two are often complementary rather than alternatives.

It is not a lighter version of ordinary coaching either. The adaptation is a skill, not a reduction in intensity.

Medical clearance comes first

This is the non-negotiable part. Before a first session, you need your doctor's view on what is allowed and what is not — in writing if a specific condition is involved.

Bring that to the first session and be specific with the coach: the diagnosis if you are comfortable sharing it, what hurts, what you have been told to avoid, any medication that affects effort or heart rate. A coach working without this information is guessing, and guessing is exactly what adapted activity exists to avoid.

A serious coach will ask for this before you offer it. If nobody asks, that in itself tells you something.

How a session runs at home

Less equipment than people expect. A clear floor area of roughly two metres by two is enough for mobility work, bodyweight strengthening and low-impact cardio. What limits things is usually ceiling height for certain movements, and the floor — bare tiles are slippery, a mat changes everything.

The first sessions are lighter than you will expect, deliberately. Progression is built over weeks, and a coach who exhausts you on day one leaves a good impression and an abandoned programme a fortnight later.

Expect the coach to ask how the previous session felt, and answer honestly — pain, stiffness, fatigue the following day. That feedback is what the adaptation is built on.

The rate

The national reference rate for personal training is 150 DH per hour. Session length, frequency and the discipline determine the actual quote, and a regular commitment is negotiated differently from a single session.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a medical certificate?

Get your doctor's view before starting, and in writing where a specific condition is involved. It is what allows the coach to build a programme rather than improvise around an unknown constraint.

Can adapted coaching replace physiotherapy?

No. A coach does not treat and does not replace a prescribed rehabilitation programme. Adapted activity often follows rehabilitation rather than substituting for it — ask your doctor where you stand before booking.

What equipment do I need at home?

Nothing at first. A clear floor area and, ideally, a mat. A coach who asks you to buy equipment before seeing you work is going about it backwards — bands and small equipment come later, once the practice is established.

How often should sessions be?

Two supervised sessions a week, held consistently, produce more than four sessions for three weeks followed by a stop. Consistency builds; initial intensity does not.
