Overnight childcare at home in Morocco: how it works

Overnight childcare at home

An overnight booking is not a long evening. The child is asleep or about to be, the role is presence and the ability to react rather than activity, and it comes with its own set of agreements — most of which are forgotten until the night itself makes them a problem.

When an overnight booking makes sense

Night shifts and early starts. A parent working nights, or leaving before dawn, needs someone present through hours no ordinary booking covers.

Travel. A trip that leaves one parent alone, or both away, where the child sleeps at home rather than being moved.

A hospital stay or an emergency. The most common unplanned reason, and the one with the least notice.

A late event. A wedding or a family occasion that runs past midnight, where returning at an uncertain hour is the whole point.

The four things to agree before the night

Where the sitter rests, and whether she may sleep. A night spent awake and a night spent on call are different jobs. Say which one you are booking.

The real time you will return. This is the one people state optimistically and the one that causes the most trouble. A night announced until midnight that stretches to three is the main reason a sitter declines the next time.

How she gets home. Regularly forgotten, and often the point that decides whether she accepts at all.

What to do if the child wakes. Whether to call you, at what hour, and what the child is used to. Write it down rather than explaining it as you leave.

The rate for an overnight booking

The national reference rate for childcare is 35 DH per hour, and an overnight booking is quoted on the hours actually covered.

What moves the quote is the span rather than the night itself: a booking that starts at nine in the evening and ends at seven is ten hours, whether the child sleeps through or not. Agree the span honestly at booking time — a quote based on an optimistic estimate is renegotiated at six in the morning, which suits nobody.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sitter sleep during an overnight booking?

That is exactly what you agree in advance. Some bookings are for a sitter who stays awake, others for someone present and available who may rest. They are different jobs and they are quoted differently, so the ambiguity has to be settled before, not discovered at two in the morning.

What if my child wakes and asks for me?

Leave written instructions on what the child is used to — a light left on, a particular routine, a comfort object — and say clearly whether you want to be called and from what point. A sitter who knows the answer handles it calmly; one who has to guess will call you either too often or not at all.

Can I book an overnight sitter at short notice?

It is possible but the choice is thinner. Overnight slots are harder to fill than evening ones, so start the request as soon as you know, give a wide span rather than a precise hour, and stay reachable — an offer left unanswered for two hours is an offer lost.

Are overnight sitters checked the same way?

Yes. Identity is verified and previous childcare references are requested before any introduction, with no difference for overnight bookings. Urgency reduces the choice available, never the level of checking.
